There’s a misconception that self-employment is reserved for a certain type of person.
The extrovert.
The risk taker.
The person with savings, a strong network and years of business experience.
Or the person who has always dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur, buying a Lamborghini and putting “CEO” in their Instagram bio.
The reality is far less glamorous and far more human.
I know because I’ve lived it.
When I started what eventually became EXTRO Creative, I had recently left employment and my first son was due in a month.
I knew the industry. I had an idea. And I believed I could build something.
What I didn’t have was a blueprint.
So I invested money I’d managed to put together into mentorship. I thought finding somebody who had already done it would help me avoid some of the mistakes new business owners make.
One of my first questions was simple:
How do I get from £0 to my first £100,000?
The answers I got were insufficient
A few sessions later, during an online session I had paid for, my mentor fell asleep.
Safe to say, I didn’t get the blueprint.
What followed was years of learning through trial, error, mistakes, relationships, experience and plenty of bumps and bruises.
And that experience is part of the reason I wanted EXTRO to launch the Self-Employment Accelerator.
Good ideas are everywhere. Access isn’t.
Not everybody starts from the same place.
Some people can invest thousands into mentorship.
Some grew up around business owners.
Some have networks filled with people they can call for advice, introductions or opportunities.
Others don't.
You could have a strong idea but very little savings.
You could understand your craft but have no idea how to find customers.
You could have years of experience but not know how to turn that knowledge into something people will pay for.
That doesn't automatically make your idea less valuable.
It means your starting point is different.
The EXTRO Self-Employment Accelerator exists to help close some of that gap.
From idea to income
This isn't about spending eight weeks learning how to call yourself a founder.
We want to answer a much more important question:
Will somebody actually pay for what you're offering?
The Accelerator will support 20 Croydon residents over eight weeks to develop and test their ideas.
We'll work through the engine that turns an idea into something real:
Idea → Customer → Offer → Marketing → Sales → Business Set-up → Revenue
You'll explore who your customer is, the problem you're solving, why somebody should buy from you, how to reach potential customers, how to market and sell consistently and how to structure your business properly.
And then you test it.
The answer might be yes.
It might be not yet.
Both answers create clarity.
You don't need everything figured out.
We're not looking for polished founders.
You might have an early idea.
You might already be earning a little money from something informally.
Or you might have a skill and think:
“I'm pretty sure somebody would pay me for this. I just don't know what to do next.”
That's exactly where we can help.
You don't need a huge network.
You don't need thousands in savings.
And you definitely don't need to pretend you have all the answers.
But you do need to be willing to work on your idea.
Because this isn't a passive business course.
The aim is action.
What do we want you to leave with?
Of course, we'd love every viable idea to begin generating income.
Action starts creating evidence.
You make the call.
You speak to potential customers.
You make your first sale.
You solve a problem.
And slowly, the question changes from:
“Can I actually do this?”
to:
“How do I make this work?”
That's a very different place to operate from.

The EXTRO Self-Employment Accelerator is a funded eight-week pilot for 20 Croydon residents.
To be eligible, you must:
Be aged 18 or over
Live in Croydon
Have a business idea or want to develop one
Have some understanding of the skill, area or type of business you want to pursue
Not currently be participating in another government-funded programme
Be available for a day in the week for 8 weeks
Commit to participating through a mixture of in-person and virtual sessions
You don't need to have everything figured out.
You just need somewhere worth starting.
